Close Reading
On our second day of school, my awesome 6th graders undertook their first reading assignment: close reading! Many of them had experienced it before, but for majority of the students this was their first time working with the text in this way!
We read an article about the ‘Top 10 Jobs in Science’. They did a wonderful job!

Hi Miss Holmquist and student bloggers!
I love hearing about your close reading on the second day of school! I had the privilege of close reading in various classrooms last year and was amazed by how well this reading strategy worked. Did this strategy help you understand the text more closely? What was your experience with it like?
Here’s a post I wrote about close reading. Hope it helps.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
Dear Ms. Holmquist and Crew Members,
What a fine example of scholarly behavior you demonstrated on the second day of school. It made me proud of not only you, but of your teacher for taking the time to introduce this strategy so early in our school year. I hope you will continue to utilize close reading strategies as you are reading independently. I find it useful in my own reading, do you?
Respectfully,
Your Principal, Mrs. Farris
Thank you for responding to our blog! Close reading was a new concept for most of us, and we liked it. At first we were nervous about all the steps, but when we went throguh it, it didn’t seem as bad. We can use this in all 3 classes.
Sincerely,
6A
Thank you for visiting our blog. After close reading, we felt more comfortable and experienced with the process and the text. We can use close reading when we read non-fiction texts.
Sincerely,
Our Awesome 6C Crew Members
